Knitting Garters


Here are some suggestions for ‘balanced’ stitches to use in knitting garters.  There are equal numbers of knit and purl stitches on each side to prevent curling.  You could do a Seed Stitch for an inch or so at either end and knit plain garter for the middle.  
(Gen's note:  Suggested dimensions are are 1-1.5" wide and 20-24" long.)

Garter Stitch –

Knit every row

 

 

Seed Stitch –

Cast on an odd number of stitches

Knit 1, Purl 1, repeat.

Repeat for every row.

 

 

Eleanora’s Double Seed Stitch -

Cast on an even number of stitches

Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1, repeat.

Row 2: Purl 1, knit 1, repeat.

Row 3: Purl 1, knit 1, repeat.

Row 4: Knit 1, purl 1, repeat.

Repeat this sequence.

 

Eleanora’s Double Garter Stitch –

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: Purl

Row 4: Knit

Repeat this sequence.

Remember on the Seed Stitch patterns, to bring yarn to the front before inserting the needle for purl stitches.  Take yarn to the back before inserting needle for knit stitches.
