Basket weaving: egg basket

While attending Gulf Wars 2007, I got to take a basketweaving class by Mistress Brigit in the Early Period Life class area. This would be my second (technically 3rd, but not documented) foray into basket weaving.

We started by creating the handle and rim of round reed. By taking a length of round reed and then twisting it around itself, we made sturdy circular rims approximtely the same diameter. Next we connected the handle and rim with the half-oval reed God's eyes. Each side was anchored in place with dental floss, and we wove the God's eye pattern on each side, something nigh impossible to descirbe, to join the two main structural pieces. Then the round reed spokes's length was eyeballed to build the rest of the frame to create "cheeks" on the bottom which will enable the basket to sit flat and stable, and were cut to size, These spokes were then carefully wedged in place and the small half oval reed was woven to lock the frame in place. We alternated weaving one side then the other working toward the middle for the body of the basket in order to keep it even from one side to the other.
